The 3,5-day pre-deployment training course is offered by Crisis Management Centre (CMC), a governmental institutions responsible for the recruitment and training of Finnish experts for international civilian crisis management missions. All of CMC's courses are open to international participants.
The course is addressed primarily to experts selected or nominated for missions in Afghanistan, however also experts looking to apply for a mission in Afghanistan in the near future can be considered. The course aims at fostering a common level of knowledge and at creating similar expectations among mission members, which in turn facilitates integration and coherence of the missions.
The course consists of four elements:
- The first day looks at the context and environment. Topics such as the role of civilian crisis management in Afghanistan and cultural awareness will be discussed.
- The second day will introduce the background to the conflict and then look at the various missions and mandates of international organisations in Afghanistan. Work particularly in the justice and police sectors will be discussed.
- During the third day course participants will discuss and practice soft skills needed in many civilian crisis management mission, namely mentoring, advising and training.
- The last day of the course ends at lunch time and looks at the most common physical and psychological health issues present in Afghanistan.
By focusing on mission-specific and function-specific issues the course aims to equip the course participants with the essential knowledge and information necessary to be active mission and team members and to operate smoothly in their respective area of assignment.
Training starts on Tuesday, 27 March and finishes on Friday, 30 March at 13:00. The course is held in Kuopio, Finland, some 400km north of Helsinki (www.cmcfinland.fi).
