Transition Strategies and Sustainability as part of the Comprehensive Approach

The credibility of the crisis response from international actors today depends more and more on their capacity to establish sustainable results in the field when addressing a crisis or post conflict situations. Security is a very important aspect thereof and it is the pre-condition to establish sustainable development (security-development nexus). This five day training course focuses on the capacity of crisis responses from major actors like the EU and the UN, more specifically in their role as global and also comprehensive security provider. A specific focus will be put on the Sahel region. An analysis will be made of the integration of the security aspects mirrored by crisis management missions as part of an overall comprehensive approach. During the course a bottom-up and a top-down approach will be discussed in terms of synergy development (transition strategies) between various instruments (security, humanitarian, development, economic and diplomatic) and joint cooperation of the international community enabling for sustainable results.

The working language will be English.

Course objectives:

After this specialization course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the mandates and objectives of the various policy instruments used and international actors in the field
  • Explain how the comprehensive approach takes place from policy level all the way till the operational level and the need for transition strategies
  • Identify appropriate synergies, actions and international partnerships possible and how to obtain sustainable results taking into account local ownership

Target audience:

Deployed staff from the various EU and UN missions (especially from the Sahel Region such as EUCAP Sahel Mali, EUTM Mali, MINUSMA, EUCAP Sahel Niger), personnel from the EEAS (planners and programmers), EU Commission, and EUSR Offices.

Registration fee

This course is free of charge. Accommodation and board will be covered by ENTRi. Course participants will be responsible for covering their own travel to the course venue.

Please note that while ENTRi courses are primarily geared toward civilian personnel working in international crisis management missions, police and military candidates are welcome to apply. Please note that course participants from the military are required to cover their own expenses during the course, including accomodation, board, and travel costs.
